Kitchen Lighting Ideas: A Complete Plan for Task, Ambient and Accent Light

3 min reading time

The kitchen is the hardest-working room in the house, and it needs more than one light. Here is a layer-by-layer plan for bright, beautiful kitchen lighting.

Americans cook, eat, work and gather in the kitchen. One central ceiling fixture is never enough for all of that. The best kitchens use three layers of light, each controlled separately, so the room can go from bright prep space to relaxed evening hangout.

Layer 1: ambient light

Ambient light fills the room so you can move around safely. Options include:

  • Recessed lights spaced evenly across the ceiling. A common rule is to divide the ceiling height by two to find the spacing: 4 feet apart for an 8-foot ceiling. See our recessed lights.
  • Flush and semi-flush ceiling lights for a decorative touch in smaller kitchens. See kitchen ceiling lights.
  • Track and surface spotlights, easy to aim and great for renovations without opening the ceiling. See kitchen spotlights.

Layer 2: task light

Task light is where you need the most brightness: counters, the sink, the range and the island.

Island pendants

Hang them 30 to 36 inches above the counter, 24 to 30 inches apart. Our island pendant guide explains how many you need. Browse kitchen pendant lights.

Under-cabinet lights

LED strips or puck lights mounted at the front of upper cabinets light the counter without shadows from your body. They are the most effective task light in a kitchen.

Over the sink

A single pendant, a sconce or a recessed light centered over the sink makes washing up easier. A sconce above a window or open shelving is a stylish option. See kitchen wall sconces.

Layer 3: accent light

Accent light adds depth and makes the kitchen feel finished:

  • Lights inside glass-front cabinets to showcase dishes.
  • Toe-kick LED strips that glow at night.
  • A spotlight on art or a textured backsplash.

How bright should a kitchen be?

Plan on about 30 to 50 lumens per square foot in total, with the most on work surfaces. For a 12 x 15 ft kitchen, that is 5,400 to 9,000 lumens across all layers. See lumens vs watts.

Color temperature

Use 3000K to 3500K for a bright yet welcoming kitchen, with a CRI of 90+ so food looks natural. Keep all fixtures in the same color family. Our color temperature guide explains the differences.

Controls make the difference

Put each layer on its own switch and add dimmers to pendants and ambient lights. You can then dim everything except the island for a dinner party, or switch on under-cabinet lights alone for a late-night snack.
