Lighting the kitchen with chandeliers
In the kitchen, a chandelier becomes the centerpiece, so size and hanging height matter as much as style. The kitchen needs bright, shadow-free light over work surfaces as well as softer light for eating and gathering. Combining general, task and accent lighting keeps the room practical and welcoming.
How to choose kitchen chandeliers
- Over the island: A linear chandelier works well over a long island; keep it about 12 inches shorter than the island and 30 to 36 inches above it.
- Ceiling height: Allow about 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling height, and keep at least 7 feet of clearance where people walk underneath.
- Color temperature: Warm white (2700K to 3000K) for relaxing spaces; 3000K to 3500K where you need to see detail.
