Island pendants are the jewelry of the kitchen, but only if they hang at the right height and spacing. Here are the measurements designers use, plus tips on size, brightness and style.
Pendant lights over a kitchen island do two jobs at once. They light the counter where you chop, serve and do homework, and they give the kitchen its personality. Getting the height and spacing right is what separates a kitchen that looks professionally designed from one that feels slightly off.
The standard rule is to hang the bottom of each pendant 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. That height lights the work surface well and keeps the view open across the kitchen.
Tall household? Raise the pendants a couple of inches so nobody sees the bulb at eye level. Most of our kitchen pendant lights come with adjustable cords so you can fine-tune on installation day.
Leave 24 to 30 inches between the centers of pendants and at least 6 inches between each pendant and the end of the island. A practical method:
Example: a 96-inch island with three pendants has 84 inches of usable length. 84 ÷ 4 = 21, so the first pendant hangs 21 inches from the usable edge, and the others follow every 21 inches.
| Island length | Small pendants (8 to 12 in) | Medium pendants (12 to 16 in) | Large pendants (16 in +) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 ft | 2 to 3 | 2 | 1 |
| 6 to 8 ft | 3 | 2 to 3 | 2 |
| 8 to 10 ft | 3 to 4 | 3 | 2 |
| 10 ft + | 4 to 5 | 3 to 4 | 2 to 3, or a linear fixture |
Odd numbers often look more balanced, but two pendants are perfect on a short island. On a long island, a single linear fixture is a clean alternative to a row of pendants. See our kitchen island pendant lights.
A simple check: the diameter of each pendant should be about one-twelfth the length of the island in inches, multiplied by the number of fixtures you will use. Keep each fixture at least 12 inches narrower than the width of the island so the light stays over the counter, not over the stools.
An island needs focused task light, roughly 30 to 50 lumens per square foot of counter. For a 3 x 8 ft island, that is about 800 to 1,200 lumens in total. Choose bulbs between 3000K and 3500K so food looks natural and the space stays crisp. Integrated LED pendant lights are energy efficient and run cool. Pair island pendants with recessed or ceiling lights for general light: our kitchen lighting plan explains how to layer them.

30 to 36 inches from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant, measured on an 8 to 9-foot ceiling.
About 24 to 30 inches center to center, with at least 6 inches from the end of the island.
Yes, as long as they share one element, such as finish, shape or height. Two different shapes in the same metal finish look intentional.
