How to choose pendant lights

  • Hanging height: Keep the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 inches above a table or island, and at least 7 feet above the floor in open walkways.
  • Shade size: Over a dining table, choose a shade about one-third to one-half the width of the table. Over an island, leave 24 to 30 inches between pendants and at least 6 inches from each end.
  • How many: One large pendant anchors a round table; two or three smaller ones read as balanced over a long island.
  • Light quality: Open and glass shades spread light around the room, while closed metal shades focus it downward for tasks.

Pendant Lights FAQ

How high should a pendant light hang over a kitchen island?

Plan for 30 to 36 inches between the countertop and the bottom of the fixture. Go toward the top of that range if you have tall family members or a ceiling over 9 feet.

How many pendant lights do I need over an island?

As a rule of thumb, two pendants suit islands up to about 6 feet long and three suit islands of 7 to 9 feet. Smaller shades let you add more without crowding.

Can I use a pendant light with a low ceiling?

Yes. Choose a compact shade and keep it over a table or counter, where nobody walks underneath. Many of our pendants have adjustable cords or rods; the drop length is listed on each product page.

Complete the room with chandeliers, ceiling lights, wall sconces and lamp shades. Shipping is free on orders over $75, and you have 60 days to return any light that is not right for your space.
